Introduction
This project was going to be for the
fall/winter 2003/2004. Accordingly, I started browsing collector car, Ebay,
etc in Feb 2003. A month later, I bid on a 1961 356B that looked halfway
decent, but needed some rust repair. The auction ended with the car well
below the reserve, but then a reduced price was negotiated after the
seller contacted me post auction. A PPI confirmed it was a decent driver
with some rust in the rockers. A great deal if all was as expected, a good
deal even with a few surprises, but it would certainly depend on the
surprises. Funds were transferred, shipping was
arranged, and the car was scheduled to arrive in PA in April 2003.
As usual with my projects, I had
discovered a vehicle well ahead of schedule. With no room in the garage, I
somehow justified a vehicle lift on the basis that it was cheaper than a a
storage facility in the long term. Ebay again came to the rescue and I purchased a practically new
lift for about half the cheapest price I saw for new
lifts. I had to rent a forklift to get this thing off
the truck and into my garage, and it was a royal pain
to put together with only my wife to help, but this
was still a fantastic deal. My 2-car garage was now a
3-car garage !!
